This vivid T-shirt design features a full-color print of Ferdinand Hodler’s iconic 1910 oil painting, “The Woodcutter.” We used a direct-to-film printing method to ensure the clarity and durability of the image. In it, a woodcutter powerfully wields an axe in a snow-covered scene. Hodler originally painted the image for the Swiss 50-franc note back in 1908 – the work became emblematic of the strength and skill of those who harvest wood from the deep forest.
On the back of the shirt is one of our favorite quotes, this one by composer Gustav Mahler: “Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire.” Hand-tool woodworkers are not anachronistic or old-fashioned – we are carrying on the beautiful tradition of essential human work. It is a powerful statement in a throwaway era.
