Decorative Spoon Carving Techniques
Edited by: Emmet Van Driesche
Back in 2023, we published a book by spoon carver Emmet Van Driesche called Greenwood Spoon Carving. It is a massive, heavy, beautiful volume that has the most comprehensive tutorials and information on spoon carving we have ever seen. That book, and its accompanying video course, turned into resounding successes for M&T.
Because of the overwhelming enthusiasm for Emmet’s first book, we’ve decided to publish his next title: Decorative Spoon Carving Techniques.
The spoons Emmet makes are a perfect example of elegant and functional simplicity. He has mastered the minimalist spoon aesthetic. But there are also many ways to richly decorate wooden wares. In order to bring together a wide variety of decorative approaches for this sequel, Emmet enlisted some of the most accomplished carvers around the world to share their techniques. Each artisan was given an entire chapter to explain and demonstrate each step of their process. Topics include roasting, ebonizing, kolrosing, chip carving, lettering, figure carving, painting, and urushi.
The book is full of gorgeous photos and is loaded with instruction and practical guidance. Like his first book, Decorative Spoon Carving Techniques was designed by Emmet’s long-time collaborator Mike Marrotte. This softcover book is 7"x 9.5" with Smythe-sewn binding and matte-coated paper. It is 128 pages, and is being printed in the United States.
If you enjoyed Emmet’s Greenwood Spoon Carving along with his companion course, you will love this sequel. There are so many rich ways to turn something as practical as a utensil into a unique (and personalized) work of art.
