Patrick Moore – “Stereotomy Across Cultures”

The ancient art of stereotomy is a synthesis of geometry, craftsmanship, and cultural heritage. A highly developed method of laying out three dimensional objects in two dimensions and envisioning each element in a structure or piece of furniture without using any measurements, the practice has been utilized by multiple woodworking traditions over the centuries.

In Issue Nineteen of Mortise & Tenon Magazine, teacher and author Patrick Moore delves into this system through three unique cultural iterations: French, German, and Japanese. He demonstrates how each tradition uses the traits of stereotomy to envision new ways of expressing culture through design. And in so doing, he pulls back the curtain and lets some light shine in to understand this unique art.

“While the detailed systems of stereotomy take on different names and forms across cultures,” Moore writes,  “they are remarkably simple and intuitive when grasped. We use these principles every day – anyone designing, constructing, or thinking in three dimensions is using an aspect of stereotomy.” While the tenets of the method are simple, they constitute a new way of seeing three-dimensional objects and give new insights into the design of a piece of furniture or timber frame.
