Joshua A. Klein – “Build Your Library”
Woodworkers and books tend to go together like peanut butter and jelly – there are just so many avenues of research to explore in our beloved craft, and so many informative volumes out there. And who better to build forever homes for books than woodworkers?
In Issue Nineteen, author Joshua A. Klein tackles a critical part of his house project – library bookshelves. Outlining the historical practices of book storage, he takes on the common modern problem of having a great many books by carefully designing built-in shelves to meet the family’s needs. Weighing practical considerations with the home’s aesthetic, these shelves were designed with timelessness in mind.
Starting with design and stock prep, Klein walks through the simple joinery and trim considerations of adapting a new built-in unit into a period room. Based on the graceful designs of 19th-century step-back cupboards, this project is sure to inspire bookworms for generations to come.
