“Build For Ever” Sticker
This sticker is based on a quote from John Ruskin’s The Seven Lamps of Architecture: “Therefore, when we build, let us think that we build for ever.” Note that there is a space between “for” and “ever.” Ruskin was not saying that we should plan to build things on and on eternally (“forever”), but rather that we ought to do all our work with a long-term view. He continued, “Let it not be for present delight nor for present use alone. Let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for; and let us think, as we lay stone on stone, that a time is to come when those stones will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that men will say, as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, 'See! This our fathers did for us.’” The carpenter hewing (Joseph) was illustrated in 1505 by Albrecht Dürer. The angels are picking up the hewn chips. Handy to have, if you can get some.
