Opting Out of Black Friday

It’s that time of year again. In a little over a week, most Americans will be gathering with loved ones to feast and celebrate over all their blessings. It is a time for rejoicing and a time for love. And consumerism.

Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, hordes of people will get up early to spend gobs of money to buy Christmas gifts. I know you know it well. At its best, it’s cash, cash, cash for lots of cheap merchandise. At its worst, it’s violence and riots. I don’t know any other way to say it: this modern tradition is absurd, and we want nothing to do with it.

So we encourage you to opt out with us.

On November 29th, Black Friday, we will be shutting down our store in protest and making Christmas gifts for our loved ones, just as we did last year. We will also be on a digital fast that day, because everyone needs time to truly unplug. (We like to call this “Black-out Friday” for that reason.)

There is nothing like gifting someone something in which you’ve infused your own personality, skill, and love. And when you factor the recipient’s unique taste into the design, your handmade gift is even more special.

So what do say? Will you join us? Will you take a step back from consumerist mess this year to craft something with love, care, and attention? Ready to turn off your devices for a day?

Put it on your calendars, plan your projects, and gather your supplies – we’ve got one week to get ready.
