Joshua A. Klein – “The Home Stretch”
The “House by Hand” 1821 Cape restoration project has been an ongoing labor of love for the M&T crew for several years. From repairing and restoring the frame to planning the foundation to weighing considerations of modern luxuries such as plumbing and insulation, every step has been carefully undertaken. Back in Issue Sixteen, author Joshua A. Klein recounted the process of raising and sheathing the old frame. But a lot has happened since!
For Issue Nineteen, Klein brings us back up to speed on the project. The 2024 calendar year was a time of expedited progress, with the goal of moving the family in by Christmastime. But before that could happen, insulation, heat, utilities, doors, flooring, and more needed to be planned and executed. Such a gargantuan workload was physically taxing and did not come without setbacks. How would the team overcome and make the deadline?
Through all the details, Klein candidly shares the portions he found both most rewarding and most difficult. Through detailed descriptions of different aspects of the work – applying lath and plaster, laying out for the use of salvaged trim in what amounts to new construction, even all the options to weigh for heating the structure – this is the heartening next chapter in the “House by Hand” project.
