This will be the “Pre-industrial Immersion” class that we’ve offered a handful of times in various forms. Over the course of four days, we’ll work on pre-industrial woodworking techniques for stock prep and joinery, explore the woods to learn about the nature of trees and wood grain, spend time examining numerous examples of antique furniture, and more. Because the goal of this workshop is to provide an immersion experience, students will have the option of building one of two projects: a taper-leg side table or a dovetailed sliding-lid box. This means that between the two projects, the students will be exposed to a plethora of woodworking activities.

Some woodworking classes are project-focused, with the number-one goal being every student getting to absolute completion. Others are focused on practicing skills with less of a concern about getting a finished item to take home. Our class is a bit different: it is a project-based class aimed at developing a fluency with hand-tool-only techniques. The immersion experience is focused more on the formative power of the learning process than getting the product at the end of the week. That said, if you’re ready to give it your all, you will definitely go home with a finished project, but make no mistake, this class will be hard work. We recommend ensuring you are prepared for the experience.

Mike and I will be providing all the needed tools and benches, although students are welcome to bring a small chest of their own tools.
