"The Trade Cards" Poster

Everybody loves a good poster, right? The ideal design should emblazon your wall with inspiration or beauty – a gorgeous photograph or thoughtful statement, rather than your sister’s old “MMMBop” poster from the ‘90s. In celebration of Mortise & Tenon Magazine’s first 10 issues, we’re releasing this beautiful image of all 10 issues’ wax-sealed trade cards, laid out on the M&T workshop’s wide pine floors, in poster form. The image was technically quite difficult to capture, requiring a complicated sliding platform (built out of rough lumber, of course) to keep the camera in plane to take multiple images. These were seamlessly spliced together, and the result is impressive: The wax seals and card edges seem to leap from the poster...

The “Good Handicraftsmen” Poster

We now have in our store a brand-new poster featuring the exquisite 1906 Aline Lamy painting featured on the inside covers of Issue Ten. We scanned this from an antique postcard I purchased a few years ago. I instantly fell in love with the painting and have been waiting for the right moment to use it. Mike and I have tried to research the context of the painting but found very little. The postcard has Cyrillic text which can be translated into English “Paris. Salon. Declaration of a strike.” So, it seems our busy Parisian craftsman is depicted hearing news of yet another labor strike. Lamy was born in France in 1862 and later on in her life moved to...

Issue Three Cover Posters Now Available!

In anticipation of the upcoming Issue Three, we’ve just released the new cover poster. It is the same (sane) 14.5” x 11” size as the first two on the same heavy paper for long-term durability. We think there is pretty much nothing more rad to hang on your wall than old hand tools. This cover features Kenneth Kortemeier receiving a drawknife which symbolizes the passing of the craft baton from recently retired Drew Langsner of Country Workshops. This image, while powerful on its own, has so much more meaning once you read this Langsner – Kortemeier story. You can order your Issue Three poster here. $15. And, yes, we do now ship all over the world. P.s. Tomorrow I will have...

Issue Two Posters Now Available

In anticipation of Issue Two being only weeks away from arrival, we added Issue Two cover posters to our offerings. This detail shot of the banister-back chair featured in in this upcoming issue is important in my mind because it shows up close the tolerances found in period work. It’s a fascinating juncture between the turned elements, split banisters, and planed lower back rail. This photo was shot before I finished this piece and so it highlights the irregularities and textures inherent in the handcraft process. These posters are same size and cost as last time ($15) and are definitely a “while supplies last” kind of thing. (We still have some the half-off Issue One posters left if you want one of...
